Up North, the weather has always been a bit like a family member. Constantly around, changes its mind rather frequently, and there’s not much anyone can do about it. You simply learn to live with it.

Perhaps that’s why, in Finland, people don’t usually ask whether it’s a good day to go outside. The question is more likely to be: what should I wear?

Finland has four distinct seasons – sometimes seemingly all in the same day – bringing their fair share of rain, wind, frost, sleet, sunshine and everything in between. Growing up with that teaches you a thing or two. When it rains, you reach for a shell. When temperatures drop, you add another layer. And when the sun finally comes out, you learn to appreciate it perhaps a little more enthusiastically than strictly necessary.
