Certified and Licensed Material Solutions

In our products, we utilize material solutions based on certified or licensed schemes. These include, for example, recycled synthetic materials, organic raw materials, and other scheme-specific material options. In addition, material development and innovation open up new possibilities for utilizing raw materials.

On the hangtags of our products, we indicate the main theme of the material sourcing used, and in the care instructions, we specify the material and its proportion in the product.

Recycled Materials

The textile material contains recycled fiber that is certified or licensed within the supply chain at material or product level. This label means that the main textile and material components of the product, such as the outer material, lining and insulation, contain, by weight, either entirely or at least the stated 30%, 50% or 70% of certified or licensed recycled material. More detailed information on recycled materials and their share can be found in the additional information section of the care instructions, where the content is specified per product, material or layer.

Recycled fibers are most commonly produced using mechanical or chemical recycling processes and may be derived from pre- and post-consumer waste streams. It may originate, for example, from used PET plastic bottles, polyester made from end-of-life textiles, or cotton recycled from textile industry surplus materials. For animal-based materials, recycled content may be derived from material reuse.

Organic Materials

The textile material contains organic based material that is certified within the supply chain at least at the yarn level. This label means that the textiles in the product contain, by weight, either entirely or at least the stated 30%, 50%, 70% or 95% of certified organic material. More detailed information on organic material and its share can be found in the additional information section of the care instructions, where the content is specified per product, material or layer.

Organic materials are produced in accordance with the principles of organic farming as well as applicable standards that set requirements for further processing and treatment of raw materials. These principles include, among other things, the prohibition of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and genetically modified seeds during the cultivation stage.

GRS – Global Recycled Standard

When a product carries the GRS label, it means that recycled material has been used in accordance with the requirements of the standard, and this has been verified by a third party throughout the entire supply chain, up to the finished product and the brand. This requires that the product contains at least 50% certified recycled material by weight. The product labelling includes the exact percentage share or the minimum percentage of the certified material type.

In addition to verifying recycled content, GRS certification includes the assessment and continuous improvement of environmental management practices, respect for social criteria, restrictions on the use of harmful chemicals, as well as transparency and regular auditing of all actors in the supply chain.

RWS – Responsible Wool Standard

When a product carries the RWS label, it means that the wool has been sourced responsibly in accordance with the requirements of the standard. This is verified by a third party throughout the entire supply chain, from the sheep to the finished product and the brand. All wool in the product is certified, and the wool content in the product is at least 5%. The product labelling includes the exact percentage share or the minimum percentage of the certified wool content.

RWS certification requires compliance with animal welfare criteria. It also includes criteria that support soil health and water stewardship, as well as respect for social rights. The certification is based on regular third-party auditing, which verifies compliance with the standard’s requirements and ensures traceability throughout the supply chain.

GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard

When a product carries the GOTS label, it means that organic material has been used in its production in accordance with the requirements of the standard. This is verified by a third party throughout the entire supply chain, for example from cotton sourcing to the finished product and the brand. The product must contain at least 70% certified organic material. The product labelling includes the exact percentage.

GOTS certification ensures organic production, compliance with quality criteria, the assessment and continuous improvement of environmental management practices, respect for social criteria, restrictions on the use of harmful chemicals, as well as transparency and regular auditing of all actors in the supply chain.

The company’s sustainable raw material sourcing principles are also supported by internal material classifications and development categories, which are primarily used to support product development, material selection and sourcing monitoring, as well as to measure progress towards the company’s sustainability targets.

Plant-derived raw material sourcing

For plant-derived raw materials, sourcing is guided by a set of criteria based on certified, licensed or controlled sources. The assessment considers the origin and traceability of the raw material, as well as social and environmental aspects related to sourcing, in line with applicable standards and sourcing programmes. The assessment may also take into account criteria related to material manufacturing and processing, such as the management of chemicals and environmental impacts, and requirements related to the material production process.

Animal-derived raw material sourcing

For animal-derived raw materials, sourcing is guided by a set of criteria focusing on certified, licensed or controlled sources. The assessment emphasizes animal welfare requirements, the traceability of the raw material, and ethical and land-use considerations in accordance with applicable standards. The assessment may also take into account criteria related to material handling and manufacturing, such as the management of chemicals and environmental impacts, and requirements related to the material production process.

Innovative Materials

Innovative materials refer to material solutions that are evaluated and developed to complement established certified raw materials. These may include, for example, bio-based synthetic materials that utilise renewable raw materials instead of fossil-based ones, as well as bio-based treatment and finishing solutions as alternatives to conventional chemical treatments.

In addition, innovative material solutions examine alternative raw material sources, production methods, as well as material structures and combinations, to the extent that they take into account the principles of the circular economy and sustainable bioeconomy, such as the renewability of raw materials and aspects related to product recyclability and further use.

In the textile industry, innovations are increasingly related to the origin of raw materials, the ways materials are used, and the development of treatment and manufacturing processes. New solutions do not always mean entirely new fibre types, but also the rethinking of the production, composition or structure of existing materials.

From the company’s perspective, innovative materials are considered as development directions that are monitored and evaluated as part of product development and sourcing. The adoption of these solutions is always based on a case-by-case assessment of the material’s functionality, availability and compatibility with existing sustainability requirements. Further details on innovative materials and treatments are provided on a product-specific basis.
