History

The company was established in 1950 under the name “AB Sportbeklädnad Urheiluvaatetus Oy” (which translates to “Sportswear Ltd.”) and the first products made included things like tracksuits. The founders of the company were Roger “Rukka” Störling, Gunborg Lehmus and Gurli and Henry Simell.

It didn’t take long for the company to score its first big international hit: in the early 1950s, Gunborg designed the iconic yellow raincoat, which has kept its status as a Finnish cult classic to this day.

Starting in the early 1960s, production was expanded to woven plastic mats as well as air-supported structures that served as sports facilities, such as tennis courts, ice hockey venues and swimming halls. In 1966, the company was renamed to “Rukka Products” after the nickname of Roger Störling.

The company returned to sportswear production in the 1970s with sailing and motorcycle outfits, and in 1981 the company name got shortened to “Rukka Oy”. The world of sailing constituted a key part of the company’s business for a time, which is still represented in the logo: The colourful flags are, in fact, part of the international maritime signal flag alphabet, and spell out the letters R, U, K, K and A.

In the mid-80s, the first jogging and golf collections were made available. The first skiing outfits followed shortly thereafter. In the 1990s, the brand expanded its selection to cross-country skiing.

Today, Rukka products are sold in over 30 countries and the main market areas apart from Finland are Europe and Russia. Rukka is part of Luhta Sportswear Company, one of the largest clothing manufacturers in the Nordic countries.
